Honeymoon: Glacier Hiking In Iceland (Part 5/5: Breathtaking Jökulsárlón)

For day 2 of the tour, we went to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, the black sand beach at Jökulsárlón, Svínafellsjökull glacier and one of Iceland lava field. I have lots of amazing photos to share and I thank my hubby for them!

At Jökulsárlón!

If there were 2 things you could not miss out in Iceland, that would have to be the sunrise and sunset. In day 2, we woke up to  a beautiful sunrise~! We were very thankful for the clear skies and great weather!

A look at our accomodation with GoEcco and our monster truck!

Love how the natural ice berg sparkles under the sunlight.

Jökulsárlón

Jökulsárlón is one of the natural wonders of Iceland. Credits to Mother Nature!! Due to its natural beauty, this area had appeared in popular Hollywood movies such as Die Another Day, Tomb Raider and Batman Begins. If you look closer at that lake, you may even spot seals swimming inside the lake. (We spotted 2!)

I still remember that the first few words I said when I reached Jökulsárlón were "Wah... Wah... WAH!!!!!!! This is AMAZING!!!!!" It was a perfect blend of white and blue colour.

The lake is one of the deepest in Iceland at a depth of 200m. That's about the height of 2 London Big Ben Clock Tower!!!

On the day of our visit, we received news that a group of tourists from another tour group had stepped onto one of the ice berg and it floated off from the coast. A rescue squad had to be called in for the emergency situation. Thankfully all of them were saved. Phew.

For those who intend to visit Southern Iceland, do note that this is a MUST-GO. Your trip to Southern Iceland would only be completed after you stopover here!

Walking towards the bridge (as seen in the picture below), you will reach the Black Sand Beach of Jökulsárlón.

Black Sand Beach of Jökulsárlón

Unlike the Black Sand Beach of Vik which had crashing waves and strong undercurrents, the Black Sand Beach of Jökulsárlón was filled with chunks of ice bergs, differing in sizes. The waves were milder and safer to stand around at.

Mr OOPS and I took the opportunity to have a mini photoshoot session at this place of wonder.

Captured the wave crashing onto the floating icebergs

Our life savers from slipping on the ice - the dear crampons

Svínafellsjökull glacier

The supposed highlight of our "Ice Caving Tour" was to go into an ice cave. However, due to weather conditions, we were brought to the Svínafellsjökull glacier for some glacier hiking instead. This place was also the filming location for popular movies such as Interstellar and the Game of Thrones. In fact, on the day of our visit, we heard that Jackie Chan was also there to film his latest movie!

Meet Halli, our guide for the glacier walk. He held onto this important role of ensuring our safety. He knew the answer to every single question we asked about the glaciers and was very open to share his knowledge and experiences with us. He also had a great sense of humour so it helped to make the glacier walk an enjoyable one.

Halli!

Since we were unable to enter an ice cave, we managed to wriggle through a "mini ice cave" that was formed on the glaciers over the years. These solid ice are hard and slippery. Under the sunlight, you will see this tinge of blue from within. We were also given the chance to lick these ice which are created over long period of time.

By now, you must had noticed how we are all moving in one single file. To put it short, we just have to follow Halli's footsteps and we will be safe and sound!

With that, we concluded our glacier walk on a happy note.

Lava Moss Fields

On our way back to Reykjavik, we managed to stop by the iconic lava moss fields of Iceland. Unfortunately, the green moss were covered in a blanket of white. If you come during summer, you will be seeing vibrant green moss on brown lava fields. The mosses in Iceland are a few hundred years old. Almost equivalent to a living antique, it is important to be gentle with them. Every year, they only grow a fraction of a millimetre. Therefore, one big step on the moss may kill many years of growth!

Fun fact: You will get into serious trouble if you are caught plucking or destroying them intentionally!

Afterthoughts:
Walking along the glaciers of Iceland still amazed me. It has been almost 4 months but I will never forget that incredible moment. It felt like I was one of the characters in the movie Interstellar.

I'm very very impressed by the resilience and "kampung-spirit" of the Icelanders. Everyone is always on the lookout and helping each other for survival reasons. This is very important since they are living in a country that is so volatile to natural disasters.

We are thankful to sign up with GoEcco for this 2D1N adventure and we will highly recommend this tour to our family, friends and blog readers! =D

As we finished part 5 of the Iceland adventure series, my heart sank because it concluded the wanderlust moments in Iceland! For those who have been following our travelling posts, we will be moving on to some adventures in other parts of the world. I'm thinking between writing about Amsterdam or Taiwan. Which one interest you more?
